okays so im in high school and we are playing a stock market game http://www.smgww.org/ and i dont know that much about hwo to play the game and how to win the game,, could someone explain to me,, and could you tell me wat are some good and really good comapnies i can invest in,, so my team can win?

First tip is to get rid of the word "playing". That is for games, for children. This is money, the real stuff. The word ought to be "work". And, it is no harder than becoming good at golf. Practice, some botched games, lotsa work, study, and after a few years you can be good at it. Some people (not me, sorry) make a full time living out of it. Investing and golf.

I was thinking retailers, like for the holiday season, but I really don’t know much else to tell him to invest in (banks, hedges, etc.)

I don’t think he’ll make any money in a mutual fund if he only has a few months to trade. Have him learn about earnings and trade around earnings reports, I think he’ll either hit or miss but thats a fun way to live "Go big or go home."

I assume that you mean a game for school. With all of the volatility in the current market and the bearish signals we’re getting, I would go with an ultrashort index fund like SDS. That fund shorts the S&P 500.

First thing you have to understand is that you don’t ‘play’ the market if you want to make money. If you wanna play, bet on the ponies, or dump your cash into the slots.
What you want to do is invest. It’s not the same thing. Educate your self, read good financial newspapers, Understand that there are unscrupulous people who want to liberate your cash, there are plenty of half truths. It’s strictly Buyer Beware. Once you give your cash to some one it might be real hard to get it back. Go slow & easy. Deal with reputable brokers. It’s like learning how to swim. You might want to try MSN Money, it’s a good site run by microsft.

"playing the stock market" is no different than gambling. Why should people gamble away their hard earn money when American corporate executives simply line their pockets with it?

Wow did you take a beating on this questions. My clients that lost their entire retirement savings in the stock market over the last 6 years would infact tell you that the stock market is a gamble. After continually listening to their high paid brokers tell them to ride it out, they now live on Soc. Sec. and their brokers are still making hand over fist. You are correct regarding the gamble and unstability of the stock market. Depending on your age, the stock market may not be the place to be. There are much safer alternatives that may not make you a millionairre, but you also lose everything you have worked your entire life for. Ask the people who invested in Enron if they would ever Play the Market Again. Unfortunately, you can do fairly well by educating yourself as the others suggest, but most folks pay someone a lot of money to use their education and advise them in good conscience, unfortunately the almighty dollar is what motivates most brokers. A lot of seniors don’t have the time to wait for the market to come back. They need their money now, and are losing thousands every quarter. I see it very much in my work.

you are not out of line for thinking that way, wish more people did. We’d have a lot more baby boomers and seniors living independently with dignity during their golden years.
